Resize Images for the Website

After numerous requests from club members here is the step by step guide to resizing your images for upload to the website.

In brief we are looking at ending up with an image that is no bigger than 600 pixels on the longest side, saved as a Jpeg and with a file size no larger than 100kb.

The tutorial is for use with the Adobe Photoshop suite of software. i.e Elements/CS/CS2/CS3

With your selected image on screen, go to the toolbar and select ‘Image’ and then click on ‘Image size’

You should get a box called 'Image Size' as the one shown below.

With this box open you need make sure that all the same boxs are ticked as in the picture below. Then change the ‘Resolution’ number to 72 pixel/inch

Also on the images longest side (Width or Height) type in 600 (pixels)............and click 'OK'

This should leave you with your image looking very small on your desktop........... don't worry this is fine.

So you have now resized the image to the correct pixel size, we just need to be able to save the file at the correct size and as a Jpeg.

To do this go back to the toolbar and select 'File' and then 'Save for Web'

This will bring up a new box with your image showing in the middle. Select the small arrow in the top righthand corner.....circled below.

When clicked the arrow will give a drop down box menu....from this select 'Optimize to File Size'

This will then give you the option to determine the 'Desired File Size' for our purpose we need to type in 100.

Make sure all the other setting are selected as the screen shot above then click 'OK'

This action will automatically change the file size to the one you requested. To check this if you look in the bottom left hand corner of the box which still has your image in it, you will see the new file size.

After checking that the image is under the required 100Kb .....then click 'Save'

Last thing to do is then select where you want to save your NEW resized image.

I'd recommend that you set up a NEW Folder to hold all the images you resize for the Website. That way it avoids the possibility of you saving this file over the original. Not what we want.

With all your 'Resized' images saved into your New Folder the only thing that remains to do is ................... e-mail them to me and I'll upload them to the Website. :-)
